The Fractured Denominator and the Hierarchy of Value
The foundational premise of division (XY) is the ethical equivalence of the denominator. For division to function as an instrument of equity, every unit within Y must hold identical value—each recipient representing a baseline of equal human entitlement. Throughout history, however, ruling elites executed a profound structural distortion: they shattered the denominator into hierarchical tiers.
Under feudalism, imperialism, and authoritarian capitalism, the primary division of societal wealth was performed exclusively among the incumbent class. The total harvest, territory, or capital (X) was divided among a minute fraction of nobility, oligarchs, or party elites who declared themselves the sole legitimate units of the primary denominator. The vast majority of the population was excluded from this first-order calculation, reduced to a sub-human category whose labor generated the dividend but whose existence was denied an equal share.
The Subsumed Remainder: Offal Rebranded as Generosity
To maintain stability and prevent immediate violent revolt, elites developed the strategy of the secondary remainder. After monopolizing the primary division, the ruling class discarded the unconsumed scraps—the structural remainder—to the lower strata, commanding them to execute a secondary, internal division among themselves.
Crucially, this predatory hoarding was cloaked in the language of paternalistic order and public stewardship. Elites claimed that their overwhelming primary share was necessary to fund the state, maintain armies, build monuments, or preserve the sacred order, framing the miserable leftovers granted to the working masses as a generous, safe allocation. Division was thus inverted: instead of a tool that guaranteed equal rights, it became a political illusion designed to rebrand structural plunder as orderly governance and charity.
The Inevitable Explosion: Revolution as the Correction of the Matrix
When a society’s governing formula degenerates into this fraudulent double-arithmetic, it loses its capacity to contain conflict. When the lower strata realize that the mathematical rule presented to them as “order” is simply systemic theft masked as arithmetic, the legitimacy of the social contract vanishes.
The historical response to this perversion is revolution. Peasant uprisings, anti-colonial revolts, and labor rebellions are moments when the suppressed masses reject the false division altogether. Revolution is the violent act of smashing the rigged matrix—a refusal to fight over the scraps of a secondary remainder, and a forcible demand to re-enter the primary denominator as absolute equals. Historically, civilization advances only when the oppressed force the powerful back to a single, unified equation, reclaiming the true, uncorrupted essence of division.
