There is also a functional aspect to adopting a hyper-masculine, rough-edged exterior in male social dynamics. In a competitive world, appearing overly soft or agreeable can feel disadvantageous. Ultimately, the desire to embody the brooding renegade is a protest against the mundane nature of daily life. Sitting in an office, following strict corporate etiquette, and pleasing others can make a person feel domesticated and powerless.
