In an increasingly interconnected world, an enticing technological proposition frequently surfaces: If fiber-optic cables can carry global internet traffic under the oceans, why not connect the world with high-voltage undersea power cables? In theory, a global transoceanic grid could send surplus daytime solar electricity from sunlit continents to dark ones, eliminating energy shortages and dissolving regional conflicts over resource scarcity. In physical and geopolitical reality, however, transoceanic power lines will not render energy geopolitics obsolete. Instead, they will exchange traditional fuel-resource conflicts for an even more dangerous, volatile era of Grid Weaponization.

The Physics of Loss: Information vs. Raw Power

The belief that electricity can seamlessly cross oceans like data misinterprets the fundamental laws of physics.

Fiber-optic cables transmit light-based information signals that experience minimal physical decay and can be infinitely amplified at periodic undersea relay nodes. Subsea electrical lines, by contrast, must transport colossal physical currents. Even with state-of-the-art High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology, electrical resistance converts significant portions of carried power directly into thermal loss over long distances. Sending electricity under the sea across vast distances—such as from Asia to North America or Australia to Europe—is a physics-driven economic failure. The energy lost as ambient heat in the ocean floor makes transoceanic power lines astronomically more expensive than generating high-density power locally.

The Weaponization of the “Off-Switch”

More critically, replacing domestic power generation with undersea imports does not neutralize geopolitical vulnerability—it multiplies it.

When a nation imports petroleum or natural gas via tankers, it can store reserves in domestic strategic stockpiles to cushion supply disruptions. When a nation relies on real-time electricity delivered via an undersea cable, its entire industrial foundation becomes an immediate hostage to the exporting or transit state. Just as weaponized gas pipelines were used to exert political pressure in Europe, a host state controlling an undersea cable holds an instant “kill switch” over another nation’s power grid. Severing a fiber-optic cable causes latency spikes and internet rerouting; cutting a high-voltage power line causes immediate, catastrophic blackouts across national data centers, factories, and hospitals.

The Sabotage Problem in Deep Waters

Undersea infrastructure is inherently defenseless against modern hybrid warfare and physical sabotage.

As recent submarine operations in the Baltic Sea and Middle Eastern waterways have demonstrated, subsea cables resting thousands of meters below sea level are exquisitely vulnerable to covert disruption—whether by military submarines or commercial vessels dragging heavy anchors. Protecting thousands of miles of underwater high-voltage lines across international waters is an impossible military task. In any major international dispute or conflict, transoceanic power lines become prime targets for asymmetrical destruction.

Conclusion

Connecting the world through undersea electrical cables is an appealing engineering fantasy, but it fails to solve the energy crisis. The physical reality of transmission loss, the astronomical capital costs of subsea armoring, and the extreme geopolitical risk of grid dependency make transoceanic electricity sharing an unviable substitute for national self-sufficiency. Rather than erasing energy geopolitics, subsea grids simply create a new weapon: the power to shut off an entire nation’s economy at the flip of a underwater switch. In an unpredictable world, true security will never lie in a cable at the bottom of the ocean, but in the unyielding reliability of domestic, high-density baseload power.
