
Why does karma—or moral retribution—seem to fail so often in the real world? If the third law of motion dictates that every action triggers an equal and opposite reaction, why do malicious actors frequently thrive without facing an obvious reckoning?
The answer becomes remarkably clear when viewed through physics and systems theory: moral retribution does not fail; rather, energy dissipates into hidden friction, system feedback loops operate on vast time horizons, and human lifespan imposes a rigid observational limit.
Energy Dissipation: From Kinetic Impact to Thermal Friction
In classical physics, energy is strictly conserved, but it does not always bounce back as a tidy, predictable kinetic force.
When a hard rubber ball strikes a rigid wall, it rebounds directly toward the thrower. However, if that same ball strikes a lump of soft clay or a loose pile of sand, it does not bounce back cleanly. The impact energy is absorbed and converted into subtle structural deformation and microscopic thermal friction. The energy has not vanished; it has merely scattered into thermal disorder, or entropy.
A similar dissipation occurs with human actions. When an individual commits a harmful act, the resulting counter-force rarely takes the form of an immediate, direct strike against the perpetrator. Instead, the force dissipates across the broader social framework as invisible friction—eroded trust, psychological stress, institutional rot, and systemic cynicism. Because this energy disperses into the background environment as social friction, human observers mistake its diffusion for the complete loss or absence of a reaction.
The Constraint of Human Lifespan: A Temporal Illusion
Just as a meteor traveling at extreme velocity appears slow when observed from a distance of 100 kilometers, systemic feedback loops operate across time scales that far exceed daily human perception.
When a bridge is built with flawed materials, the structural strain accumulates silently over decades before catastrophic collapse occurs. Similarly, corrupt behavior within a human institution or society sets off destructive feedback loops that can take generations to culminate in systemic breakdown.
The human lifespan—a brief observational window of roughly 80 years—creates a temporal blind spot. A malicious actor may live out their life in material comfort and die before the long-term systemic consequences of their actions fully manifest. This “temporal evasion” is not an exception to the law of cause and effect; it is merely an artifact of an observer whose lifespan is far shorter than the system’s corrective cycle.
The Target of Reaction: Individual vs. System
Human intuition expects retribution to target the individual perpetrator directly in a neat, personal reckoning. In physics and ecology, however, restorative forces act upon the entire system rather than isolated parts.
When an overabundant species overconsumes resources in an ecosystem, the immediate generation enjoys prosperity. The resulting reaction—ecological collapse and mass starvation—is borne by the broader population and future generations.
Similarly, unethical actions corrupt the immediate environment, shifting costs onto families, organizations, or society at large. The system absorbs the blow and eventually corrects itself, but because the reaction distributes across the whole network rather than striking the individual alone, human eyes fail to recognize it as a manifestation of action and reaction.
Summary
The apparent absence of moral retribution is an observational illusion born of human scale.
Action and reaction remain absolute. What humans perceive as “unpunished wrong” is simply energy dissipated into widespread social friction, or a systemic feedback loop whose complete cycle outlasts a single human lifetime. The laws of the universe operate without exception—we simply lack the time horizon to watch every orbit complete.
