While catastrophic global impacts belong to the distant geological past, humanity has witnessed several significant meteor events firsthand.
The Tunguska Event (1908, Russia)
The most powerful meteor event in modern human history occurred over the remote region of Tunguska in Siberia. A space rock approximately 50 to 60 meters wide entered the atmosphere and, unable to withstand the extreme heat and pressure, exploded in mid-air at an altitude of 5 to 10 kilometers.
The Qingyang Meteor Event (1490, Ming Dynasty China)
One of the most lethal historical meteor events on record occurred during China’s Ming Dynasty. Historical records from the Shaanxi province describe a terrifying event where “a rain of stones” fell upon the region.
The Chelyabinsk Meteor (2013, Russia)
The Chelyabinsk event stands as the first major meteor airburst captured vividly in high definition by dashcams, smartphones, and security cameras. A space rock roughly 20 meters in diameter entered the atmosphere at 19 kilometers per second and detonated about 30 kilometers above the ground.
Historical Records Across Cultures
Beyond these famous events, historical texts across Asia and Europe—including the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea and Roman records—frequently documented “daytime fireballs,” “falling stars that shook the earth like thunder,” and stones descending from the heavens.
Had an event like Tunguska occurred directly over a dense metropolis like London, Tokyo, or New York, it would have been a catastrophic tragedy in human history. Fortunately, because nearly 70% of Earth’s surface is covered by ocean and vast stretches of land remain unpopulated, humanity has largely been spared the worst of these cosmic collisions.
