Modest Luxuries Sparked by Structural Despair

We live in an era where the difficulty of achieving growth has soared to extreme heights. The old formula—where hard work and sweat guaranteed homeownership and upward social mobility—has long been broken. Amid skyrocketing asset prices and a low-growth economic structure, it has become nearly impossible for individuals to secure grand future growth, no matter how much they save or strive.

Confronted by this immense despair, people give up on accumulating wealth for the future. The prevailing mindset becomes: "If I can’t buy a home even after saving for a lifetime, I might as well give myself definite satisfaction today." The starting point was clearly a structural flaw: as the difficulty of growth escalated, individuals abandoned monumental goals and opted for "small yet luxurious meaning-making."

Escalated Maintenance of Dignity and the Rising Wall of Growth

Yet the tragedy does not end there. An escape that began with small acts of meaning-making paradoxically brings a harsher reality into play.

The development of social media and branding techniques has exponentially raised the bar for what constitutes "small meaning." Where humble happiness once resided in modest meals or tiny trinkets, today’s meaning-making takes the shape of expensive designer brands, niche perfumes, and extravagant desserts. The minimum "cost of maintaining dignity" required to preserve self-esteem has drastically increased.

Accustomed to small luxuries and emotional gratification, individuals lose the capacity to accumulate the seed money or capital needed for true self-development and growth. The pursuit of modest meaning ultimately pushes the difficulty of growth to an even more impossible level.

Portrait of the Modern Individual Trapped in a Loop

Ultimately, the full relationship between cause and effect forms a vicious cycle where both forces interlock like gears:

The sweet pursuit of meaning becomes a "sweet poison" that actively hinders the very survival and growth it was meant to cope with. Ironically, the small sanctuary chosen as the price for giving up grand growth turns into a cage that locks individuals out of growth altogether.

An Autonomous Perspective Piercing Through the Loop

It is human instinct for creatures who thrive on symbols and meaning to seek small joys in life. However, when that meaning-making becomes the sole escape route gnawing away at one’s own future, one falls into the most sophisticated trap dug by consumerism.

We must ask ourselves: Is the meaning I consume an honest priming pump that helps me endure a harsh reality, or is it a sweet anesthetic that paralyzes real growth opportunities? Only a cool-headed gaze that sees through this contradictory loop will serve as the autonomous key to steering one’s life toward real growth, rather than being swayed by fictional meaning.
