A structure where, after stably meeting domestic food demand, surplus quantities are exported overseas, while discarded byproducts and rollover stock are recycled into bioenergy. Redefining food not merely as "edibles" but as "bio-raw materials" to break through the earnings ceiling—this diversification model offers a highly creative and realistic milestone capable of transcending the chronic limitations facing agriculture.

The Uncapped Horizons Already Proven by Agricultural Giants

In reality, cases of linking food and energy to break through price ceilings are already operational across the globe.

The United States, the world’s largest corn producer, converts 30% to 40% of its total yield into bioethanol rather than food. When bumper crops threaten to cause grain prices to crash, it diverts corn into the energy market to support the price floor; when international oil prices surge, it sells ethanol to reap high profits akin to oil market levels. Brazil similarly flexes its sugarcane production between sugar and bioethanol, deriving immense profits from international commodity markets. Furthermore, the byproducts left after crushing crops are recycled into biogas generation or high-protein animal feed, driving waste disposal costs down to zero.

The moment food is no longer confined to "things we eat" and is instead connected to energy and material markets, the ceiling for agriculture opens wide.

The Korean Reality: Barriers Built by Land Area and Unit Costs

Why, then, is it difficult to immediately and fully implement this attractive circular model in South Korea or in high-tech smart farming environments? It comes down to the cold realities of cultivated land area and baseline unit costs.

For bioenergy produced from corn or sugarcane to be economically viable, it presupposes "cheap raw materials" mass-produced via mechanization across vast fields stretching to the horizon. If South Korea—with its limited land area and high real estate prices—or crops grown in smart farms with heavy initial construction costs and electricity bills were converted entirely into gas or ethanol, it would trigger a paradox: "spending more money and electricity just to generate energy." Unless it is large-scale, open-field agriculture utilizing nature’s free sunlight, escaping a physical deficit in terms of Energy Return on Energy Invested (EROEI) is near impossible.

The Korean-Style "Ceiling Breaker": Green Bio and Byproduct Recirculation

Where, then, lies the realistic alternative to break through agriculture’s price ceiling in an environment like South Korea’s? It lies not in converting whole crops into fuel, but in strategic evolution through high-value Green Bio and the resource recovery of byproducts.

A prime example is cultivating specialized crops in smart farms that yield target proteins, raw materials for natural pharmaceuticals, or key ingredients for high-end cosmetics instead of standard food crops. The moment a crop’s utility shifts from "food" to "pharmaceutical and bio-materials," its value is recognized at tens to hundreds of thousands of won per gram, completely dismantling the market’s price ceiling.

Simultaneously, a circular system must be established to gather discarded stems, roots, non-marketable produce, and livestock manure—excluding the edible portions—to power biogas (methane) generation, while using the remaining liquid digestate as agricultural fertilizer. This preserves the core essence of food production while maximizing the benefits of resource recirculation through the byproducts generated along the way.

Leap from a Primary Industry to a Future Comprehensive Industry

While it is true that agriculture carries the noble mission of food security, that responsibility should not shackle agriculture into a "chronically loss-making industry eternally dependent on government subsidies."

Building upon the fundamental pillar of food security, opening premium export markets, shattering the profit ceiling with high-value Green Bio, and recycling discarded byproducts into energy—when agriculture is redefined beyond a simple primary industry into a future comprehensive industry encompassing energy, medicine, and the environment, it will finally cross the Valley of Death and advance toward a sustainable future.
