
A Provocative Question: Is Printing Data the Revival of Logistics?
When discussing the "extinction of logistics" in the digital economy, we often face a counterintuitive scenario: receiving knowledge-information—such as a report or blueprint in PDF format—from an overseas seller, and then printing it out so that the buyer holds a "physical reality" of paper in hand. A tangible material is born, and information exists before our eyes embodied in the medium of paper. Can this process, which starts as a digital file and ends as a physical paper document, be considered a modern variant of "logistics" with merely a changed form? The conclusion first: it cannot. This act fails to enter the domain of logistics; it is merely an event combining the transmission of information with the buyer’s "local self-production."
The Supplier’s Role Limits: "Provision of Information," Not Physical Movement
The fundamental definition of logistics (physical distribution) lies in a process where the supplier serves as the primary subject, moving the physical entity of goods across space and time to deliver them to the consumer. In the process where a customer receives and prints knowledge-information, the supplier’s action ends strictly with the "transmission of digital data (bits)." The supplier never bought paper, applied ink, or loaded boxes of printed documents onto a truck. The sole entity that crossed borders or space was the flow of information composed of zeros and ones. Because the supplier’s responsibility and actions were completed upon the "delivery of information," logistically active operations on the supplier’s end simply do not exist.
The Origin of Physical Reality: "Local Self-Sufficiency" by the Consumer
Examining the origin of the physical reality—the paper and ink coming out of the printer—makes the distinction clear. The paper, ink, and printer equipment used for printing are all "consumer assets" that the buyer already owned through normal commercial transactions and customs procedures within the domestic distribution network. The act of the buyer consuming their own resources to create a physical form based on received data constitutes "self-production by the buyer (prosumption)" using the delivered information, rather than delivery in distribution. This follows the same logic as buying a furniture assembly manual and building furniture at home with your own wood, which is never called the furniture company’s "logistics."
The Future of Distribution Shown by 3D Printing: Localization of Production
This concept becomes even more starkly evident in the field of 3D printing. Suppose you purchase the design blueprint (an STL file) for a 3D figure or part from an overseas designer and print it out at home in Korea. What crossed the border in this case was the knowledge-information of the blueprint; the physical plastic figure was only "generated" in Korea using the buyer’s equipment and materials. From the standpoint of trade and distribution, physical movement of a product never occurred. The "point of production" merely shifted from the supplier’s factory to the consumer’s desk. As the localization of production reaches its extreme, the very need for logistics evaporates.
From Movement to Generation: The Boundaries of Distribution in the Information Age
Ultimately, the act of a customer printing knowledge-information must be defined not as the "movement of goods (logistics)," but as the "transfer of information and its local materialization." What the supplier handed over was bits free of physical constraints, and the subject who transformed them into the form of atoms was the buyer, not the supplier. Bits neutralize borders and distances, while atoms unite only within the consumer’s space. This is precisely why the output of knowledge-information can never be logistics: because distribution is the art of moving, while printing is the act of generating.
