The Truth of Life We Never Realized: We Already Live in Four Dimensions
We often refer to ourselves as beings of a three-dimensional world. We rest our bodies within the clear contours of space—width, length, and height—unfolding right before our eyes. Yet the moment we raise our heads and reflect upon time, the laws of physics quietly reveal another truth: that we are, in fact, already part of a vast continuum called four-dimensional spacetime.
Helpless Travelers Walking a One-Way Path of Time
Along the three spatial axes, we enjoy freedom. We can step forward, retreat, climb stairs, or descend into the cellar. But the moment we enter the fourth axis—time—we all become helpless travelers. Without any choice, we are pushed forward second by second, solely toward the future. Merely by existing, we are already enduring and experiencing a four-dimensional world.
A Cognitive Privilege to Envision the Future: Conscious Time Travel
What, then, is a life that calculates and keeps the unwritten future in mind? It is not physical movement through dimensions, but a "mental simulation" gifted by the human brain. It is the ability to freely picture and prepare for the coming time. Though our physical bodies can never depart from the present moment for even a split second, our consciousness moves freely along the linear axis of time to confront the future. This is humanity’s highest survival strategy and cognitive privilege, mastered in defiance of an axis flowing in only one direction.
When the Past Invades the Present: The Brain’s Poignant Temporal Glitch
On the flip side, what about memories of the past that suddenly break in and overwhelm us, like trauma? Sometimes, a wound loses its timestamp and squeezes through the door of the present. When the brain’s threat-detection mechanism fires up, the pain of years ago loses its quiet label of "the past." It shakes us as if it were a reality unfolding right beside us at this very moment. The dimensions haven’t changed, but it is a biological error where past sensations are forcibly "copied and pasted" onto the present coordinates. It is a poignant temporal glitch experienced by the brain, a signal sent by unforgotten pain.
A Journey of the Mind Beyond Time
Ultimately, human beings are truly intriguing creatures. While the body has always been bound to the vast framework of four-dimensional spacetime, walking silently toward the future, the mind constantly defies and leaps across time. We find our feet tethered, trapped by past memories; at other times, we reach out toward an unknown future, transforming our present.
Living a Four-Dimensional Day to the Fullest
Perhaps "living" is a journey of the mind, constantly moving back and forth among three temporal points—the past, the future, and the present—upon the four-dimensional stage. Today, too, along the flowing axis of time, bearing our own distinct memories and expectations, we live out our four-dimensional day to the fullest.
