The Disappearance of Physical Reality and the Paradigm Shift in Distribution
In the traditional world of distribution, commercial distribution (commercial flow) and logistics (physical flow) always moved together like a needle and thread. Whether buying snacks at a grocery store or paper books at a bookstore, a transaction contract was inevitably followed by physical movement—loading goods onto trucks and storing them in warehouses. How, then, should we define the distribution of knowledge-information services or pure digital assets, where physical reality has completely vanished? The trading of intangible goods—such as content, data, software, cryptocurrencies, and NFTs—reveals a new distribution ecosystem where the logistics phase is completely eliminated, leaving 100% "commercial distribution."
Why "Logistics" Does Not Exist in Digital Goods
The reason logistics does not occur in knowledge-information or digital asset transactions is clear: there is no physical reality—that is, no atoms—to be moved.
The processes of paying for video streaming service (OTT) subscriptions on online platforms, purchasing software (SaaS) licenses, or receiving consulting reports as PDF files are all acts of buying and selling the "right to use" the goods known as knowledge and information. The internet transmission process where data moves between servers and devices is merely digital communication; it is not called physical "logistics," as it does not involve trucks, roads, or warehouses.
Distinguishing Metaphorical "Data Logistics" from Actual Distribution
In the IT and data industries, the term "Data Logistics" is sometimes used metaphorically to refer to pipelines or systems that efficiently collect, process, and transmit massive amounts of data. However, this is merely a rhetorical expression used because the technical flow of processing data resembles the process of sorting and transporting goods in a logistics warehouse. In terms of distribution classification within academic and industrial contexts, the essence of providing knowledge-information and trading digital assets still belongs entirely to commercial distribution, where value and rights are exchanged.
The Era of Pure Commercial Flow Centered on Ownership and Usage Rights
Knowledge-information services and pure digital assets represent the culmination of technically stripping away the rough process of "physical movement" in the history of distribution. Where physical constraints have disappeared, only the contemplation of ownership, usage rights, and how to define and trade value remains. Ultimately, even with the arrival of an era of intangible digital goods, the fundamental framework of distribution remains unshaken. Although logistics—which directs the physical movement of goods—may vanish, commercial distribution, which exchanges rights and value, continues to operate in its purest form, dressed in digital clothes.
