"Since the court handed down an acquittal, all those suspicions are entirely fraudulent, and I am completely innocent."

This is the quintessential phrase deployed by politicians and plutocrats, a scene we witness daily on the news. Watching this proclamation, the masses generally fracture into two opposing currents: one faction borrows the authority of the law to worship the individual as a completely unblemished entity, while the other sneers with cynicism, claiming the judiciary is rotten to the core.

Yet, those who have deeply pondered the anatomy of the law are acutely aware: an acquittal does not prove the truth that an individual "did not commit a crime"; it merely signifies that the state "failed to gather sufficient legal evidence" to substantiate their guilt.

The exact moment we awaken to this chilling reality—that an acquittal is not synonymous with the truth—we confront a titanic cognitive dissonance and a swamp of profound distrust engulfing our society.

The Legal Conclusion of Acquittal vs. Living, Breathing Suspicions

Suppose a high-profile figure’s embezzlement suspicion is finalized by the court as a definitive "acquittal." The masses, assuming that a judicial verdict has been rendered, convince themselves that the allegations were false and attempt to close the chapter. Within the domain of substantive truth, however, that individual may very well have pocketed the funds. They simply burned the core ledger or cunningly evaded the legal network to leave zero traces of evidence.

This is where a severe societal rupture ignites. Institutionally, an immunity branded as an "acquittal" has been issued, yet in reality, the suspicions and inner convictions continue to drift through society like a phantom. Once the awareness that judicial verdicts fail to fully capture substantive truth spreads as common sense among the populace, a society that appears intact on the surface rapidly sinks into a "hyper-distrustful society" where no one trusts anyone. A freezing cynicism dominates, dictating that a written verdict is merely a legitimate shield purchased with the money of the powerful.

The Deception of the Right to Know: What Are We Truly Witnessing?

Can we truly claim, then, that the current system sufficiently guarantees the public’s "right to know"? Absolutely not.

The judicial system acts as though it satisfies the public’s right to know by transparently opening trial processes and permitting access to written verdicts. However, that is merely a right to know "institutional facts"—processed, filtered, and tailored by legal professionals. It is by no means a "right to know the substantive truth" regarding what actually transpired.

We are merely granted the right to spectate a refined theatrical play staged by the court; we remain utterly blinded to the true substance of the event that unfolded backstage. It is the most sophisticated concealment of information, masquerading as transparency.

The Dilemma: Neither Halting Contemplation Nor Abandoning Society to Distrust

The most vicious crux of this dilemma resides precisely here:

It is highly dangerous for the masses to nakedly contemplate and awaken to the institutional limits of the judiciary—the fact that "the court is not a place that unearths the truth."

If they do, the authority and credibility of the judicial framework will collapse wholesale, ushering in a catastrophic state of social anomie. Conversely, gagging the eyes and ears of the masses to forbid contemplation, declaring that "the court’s verdict is an unconditionally sacrosanct truth, so believe it without talking back," is a thoroughly deceptive and tyrannical notion.

To candidly acknowledge the limits of the law opens the gates to a hell of societal distrust and dog-eat-dog survival; to forcefully preserve the myth of the law requires us to sustain a colossal theatrical play that treats the populace as fools. The system is trapped in a checkmate.

At the Terminus of a Crumbling Myth

Ultimately, the destination the law arrives at is never the final station of justice, but merely an "administrative terminus" that forcefully seals social conflict.

Even if an era arrives where technology advances to allow a judicial AI to hand down "verdicts based on evidence" with greater speed and precision, this primordial distrust will remain unresolved. The machine will calculate evidence far more ruthlessly than a human ever could, and the chasm between unproven truth and legal acquittal will widen even more brutally.

Phantoms of substantive truth hiding behind the legal immunity of an acquittal. And the chilling gaze of the masses, who have begun to discern the rules of this theatrical play. I cannot erase the haunting thought that what the thick stone walls of the judiciary are shielding is not justice, but perhaps a deceptive peace that society clings to just to keep itself from fracturing apart. In an era that has realized the law cannot speak the truth, which milestone must we trust to guide our steps? As contemplation deepens, the night of distrust deepens right along with it.
