In the past, "hipness" was mostly defined by actions with incredibly high "cognitive cost-effectiveness." Letting go of the reins of reason and surrendering to instinct—whether stumbling in a drunken stupor or drifting in a drug-induced haze—demanded neither intricate planning nor brainpower. It required nothing more than paralyzing one’s mind and tossing oneself into an outlet of raw instinct. It was, quite literally, a cost-effective deviation: maximum liberation achieved with minimal mental effort.

Today’s hipness, however, runs dead against this cognitive cost-effectiveness. Meticulous dietary management, crack-of-dawn workouts, and the maintenance of rigid routines constitute a "high-difficulty deviation" that demands immense cognitive effort, systematic planning, and bone-carving willpower.

Why this bizarre phenomenon where youth control and confine themselves even more strictly than the older generation ever did? Why have humans, who naturally find comfort in obeying instinct, chosen this cognitive regression that exhausts the brain’s energy to its absolute limit?

Peering into that abyss reveals a uniquely poignant psychological plot twist native to the modern youth generation.

The Only Thing That Never Betrays: ‘The Exhibition of Effort’

During the past era of high economic growth, the hallmark of cool for the older generation was "Effortlessness." It was a time when one could live haphazardly, drink all night, and still secure a job and buy a house upon graduation. Subtly flashing a posture of "I can live like a wreck and still be perfectly fine" was a badge of hipness.

Today, however, we live in an absolute "era of helplessness," where no amount of effort guarantees life’s rewards—be it a home, a stable career, or upward social mobility. Young people witness their societal efforts being betrayed daily. Consequently, they redirect their gaze toward the single object where effort never betrays, yielding 100% honest, mathematically precise results: their own bodies.

Muscles develop and vitals drop with absolute honesty, precisely matching the chicken breast chewed and the squats endured. The world cannot be engineered to one’s liking, but one’s body and daily routine remain the sole territories on Earth capable of absolute, flawless control.

While hipness once meant "the thoughtless nonchalance of living by instinct," the upper-tier thrill today comes from exhibiting Conspicuous Effort—presenting oneself as an intellectual human being who perfectly blueprints and regulates life so that the chaotic world cannot shake them.

Easily Obtained Stimuli are Now the Domain of Losers

Psychologically, human beings always crave that which is hardest to attain, deriving a sense of superiority once they possess it.

During the youth of the older generation, society at large was deeply Confucian and oppressive; rules and restrictions were everywhere. Naturally, the "debouchery and deviance" that smashed those barriers became the rarest, most attractive currencies.

Today, however, stimuli and indulgence are the default settings of the world. With the simple flick of a finger while lying in bed, one can feast on sensational short-form videos and delivery food. Room-bound dopamine addiction, which requires minimal mental effort and zeroes out cognitive cost, has become entirely too easy. And because it has become so effortless, it is no longer cool; rather, it has begun to feel like the listless, impotent "behavior of a loser" ruining themselves.

As a result, extreme moderation and a wholesome lifestyle—feats not just anyone can pull off—have elevated into the rarest independent culture with the highest barrier to entry. This is precisely why the elite act of pushing one’s cognitive capacity to the limit to exert self-control has been upgraded to the hippest territory.

A ‘Bottom-Up Rebellion’ Against the Establishment

Rebellion in the past was a top-down descent, breaking the stuffy moral yardsticks of the older generation by moving beneath them. Today’s rebellion among the youth, however, operates as a "Bottom-Up Rebellion" (fueled by Moral Superiority)—a sophisticated mockery of the establishment by becoming cleaner, more correct, and healthier than them.

They direct a refined disdain toward the lifestyle of the older generation, who gather every night in sticky after-work drinking sessions, pouring drinks until their bellies bloat. It is a silent declaration: "I will not live neglecting myself the way you do. I am a more evolved species of human—one who treasures my body, maintains a clear mind, and micro-manages my own daily life."

Embedded within this fierce cognitive control is the most elegant, icy veto against the stale, antiquated ways of established society.

From the Paralysis of Instinct to the Control of Instinct

If youth of the past found liberation through the "release of instinct" via the paralysis of reason, modern youth find a thrilling chill through the "control of instinct"—safeguarding their reason to the bitter end amidst a deluge of dopamine. These clever rebels have instinctively realized that surrendering one’s entire body to overflowing stimuli is, ultimately, the path to becoming an obedient slave engineered by giant capital and the system.

With this, the reason why the rigid rules of health textbooks clashed with complex humans—and why the psychology of public health was desperately needed to bridge that gap—is finally complete.

Humanity has not evolved. We still live with the primitive brains of cavemen who are inherently lazy, crave sugar, and long to flaunt before others. Yet, the modern new human has taken those primitive tools of conspicuous display and the desire for recognition, and forged them into the most brilliant, intellectual shield against this mad society of addiction: extreme moderation.

The textbook answers were cold, but the reality of the human beings who transformed those answers into the hippest weapons of resistance within their own lives is brilliantly warm and remarkably clever. What does it matter if we fail to hit the core of pure health? Instead of succumbing to instinct, controlling it and running toward one’s own version of a "God-saeng" day by day is, in itself, the most flawless answer.
