Structural Transcendence and the Neutralization of the System
Those who awaken to the operational principles of the system and their own unconscious mechanisms (the code) are no longer swayed by the causality enforced by the system. Much like Neo stopping the trajectory of bullets in the movie, an awakened being can reject the “inevitable outcomes” generated by social conventions or biological impulses and twist their flow. While others are consumed by the reward systems of “success” or “fear” set by the system, they acquire an “absolute autonomy” independent of it by recognizing that the rewards themselves are fabricated data. At this juncture, they become more powerful than anyone else within the system.
The Alienation and Misery of a Transparent World
However, this power inevitably accompanies solitude. The moment one awakens to the fiction of the system, the “earnest joy” and “desperate sorrow” that others enjoy within it begin to look like a mere simulation. When others marvel at the taste of a steak, the person who perceives it as a mere electrical signal can no longer empathize and communicate on the same plane as them.
Awakening to free will is an act of tearing away the comfortable protective shield provided by the greenhouse of the system, which directly leads to the existential threat of the “loss of meaning.” If everything depends on one’s mind (Ilche-yusimjo) and everything is merely the system’s code, then there are no longer “things that must be done” or “absolute values.” Without an internal driving force to endure this nihilism, awakening becomes a curse rather than liberation.
Tragic Hero, or Cynical Observer?
Ultimately, the fate of an awakened being within the system is determined by whether they possess the will to write a “new narrative.” If they realize the futility of the system and fall into cynicism, they will remain a miserable observer; however, if they use that fictional space as a tool to create their own values, they become a “creative subject” who redefines the system, just like Neo.
To those endowed with free will, the system is no longer a prison, but a massive testing ground and playground where they can project their own volition. Powerfulness and misery are not separate emotions, but simply different names for the exact same cost one must pay to wield the colossal energy of autonomy.
