In the square of democracy, the critical intellect of the minority often becomes the most vulnerable entity. When they attempt to pull the brakes on the momentum of the masses, the majority—instead of offering a logical rebuttal—labels them as “shills for power” or “arrogant elites” to silence them. In a society dominated by the belief that the will of the majority is synonymous with justice, the minority intellect that dares to question that will is treated as an impurity threatening the system. Here, democracy faces the crisis of ceasing to be the governance of the wise and instead becoming the politics of the loudest.
The Strategy of Framing Intellect as a Lackey of the Establishment
The most efficient way for the masses to disparage the minority intellect is to frame their knowledge as a “tool of power.” When the intellect warns of complex causalities or long-term side effects, the majority—seeking immediate gratification—interprets these warnings as an establishment conspiracy intended to block their path. In this process, expertise is rebranded as arrogance, and critical distancing is disguised as a “chosen people” complex that looks down on the public. This is an age-old cognitive distortion that clouds the essence of the debate by attacking the “background” of the intellect rather than the intellect itself.
The Disappearance of Principled Elites and a Pandering Leadership
The tragedy is deepened by the fact that the leadership in a democratic society is not always composed of principled elites. Within the electoral system, politicians often choose to pander to the anti-intellectual sentiments of the masses to secure votes rather than resisting them. “Populism”—which incites the jealousy and anger of the public to attack the minority intellect—is a favorite tool used by the leadership to solidify their own power. Consequently, the intellect finds itself in a double isolation: disparaged by the masses and either exploited or discarded by those in power.
Why the Intellect Cannot Abandon the Square
If the intellect, faced with disparagement and suppression, chooses to leave the square and remain silent, democracy becomes a runaway train hurtling toward its own destruction. The role of the intellect is not to be loved by the masses, but to be the sentry pointing toward the cliff that the masses cannot see (or refuse to see). Even if they are branded as “spokespeople for the establishment,” the very act of refusing to abandon the ladder of universal values and reason is what preserves the final dignity of democracy.
Closing Thoughts
The isolation experienced by the intellect in a democratic society may be a fated punishment they must endure. However, the more intense the disparagement and suppression of the intellect become, the more closely we must observe the direction in which that intellect is pointing. We must remember that history’s most tragic disasters occurred when the majority rushed in one direction, mocking the warnings of the minority.
True democracy is not a place that flaunts the power of the majority, but a place where the critical voices of the minority can freely traverse the square. The only way for the intellect to prove it stands not with power, but solely with “truth,” is to continue cracking the wall of public distrust through constant criticism and self-reflection. The moment the disparaged minority intellects stop building their ladders, the great experiment of democracy will sink into the mire of vulgar mobocracy. To persist in questioning, even amidst that desperate isolation—that is the sole and greatest resistance of the intellect.
