History is not a fixed truth. It is merely the “most plausible narrative” reconstructed from the fragments left by time, viewed through a modern lens. When new historical materials emerge or the perspective of an era shifts, yesterday’s established theory becomes today’s myth. In this context, declaring the resurrection of Jesus as an “undeniable fact” may be an assertion that overlooks the inherently fluid nature of historiography.


Records Do Not Guarantee Fact

Most of the testimonies supporting the resurrection were recorded by followers of Jesus. From the perspective of historical criticism, it is difficult for a text influenced by the subjectivity and intent of the recorder to maintain pure objectivity. We cannot rule out the possibility that the empty tomb or eyewitness accounts were embellished to solidify the doctrines of that era.

Ultimately, history is closer to a recorded interpretation than a recorded fact. This is why the resurrection, which might have been a life-altering truth for some, is read by others as a sophisticatedly designed religious symbol. The moment we shift our perspective, “undeniable evidence” is relegated to “traces with ample room for interpretation.”


Filling the Gap in Causality

Nevertheless, why has the hypothesis of the “resurrection” endured for 2,000 years? It is not because of the event’s scientific evidence, but because the historical phenomena that followed were so profoundly counter-intuitive.

The fact that cowards who betrayed their master suddenly chose martyrdom at the risk of their lives, and that the vast Roman Empire eventually succumbed to a minor religious movement from the periphery, are clear products of history that actually occurred. We are faced with a situation where the cause is unclear, yet the effects are strikingly vivid. Historians feel a sense of bewilderment before this massive void in causality.

When some say they “cannot deny” the resurrection, their true underlying meaning is closer to a confession: that without the premise of the resurrection, there are no proper logical tools to explain the explosive changes that occurred during that era. In other words, the resurrection is not so much a proven fact as it is the “strongest hypothesis” adopted to explain the phenomena.


Ultimately, the Burden of Choice

History does not present us with a perfect answer. It merely tosses us a few clues and circumstances. Whether one connects those fragments to accept the resurrection as a reality, or dismisses it as a narrative birthed from the limitations of records and human aspiration, is ultimately up to the individual.

The phrase “cannot be denied” is not the final stop of logic, but the starting point of faith. It is the will to acknowledge the incompleteness of records while affirming something beyond them—or the stance of refusing to withdraw one’s skepticism despite all the circumstances.

In the end, the debate over the resurrection remains less a game of determining historical fact and more a question of how much weight each person will give to the limitations of human records. History lays out the evidence, but it is always human choice that places the final period at the end of the sentence.
