We Were Taught to Think of Salvation as a Post-Death Issue
In Christianity, salvation is usually understood like this:
If you believe, you go to heaven.
If you do not believe, you are judged.
Salvation is consumed as a posthumous result—
a verdict delivered after life ends.
But this is different in tone and substance
from the salvation Jesus spoke of.
The Salvation Jesus Spoke of Begins “Here and Now”
In Jesus’ language,
the Kingdom of Heaven is not a future place,
but a transformation of life that begins in the present moment.
“The Kingdom of God is among you.”
This does not mean a place you go after death—
it means an event in which a person changes, here and now.
Salvation is not an afterlife ticket.
It is a conversion of one’s way of living.
Salvation Is an Event of Being Released from Self-Centeredness
The core of the salvation Jesus spoke of
was not about suppressing desire.
It was about being released from:
self-centeredness,
self-preservation instinct,
and the attitude of judging the world by one’s own standards.
That is why he said:
Love not only your friends, but your enemies.
Choose forgiveness over revenge.
This was not a moral code—
it was a demand for a transformation of consciousness.
That Is Why This Salvation Was Dangerous
Such salvation cannot be managed by power.
When people change here and now,
hierarchies, control, and order are shaken.
So the Church translated this salvation
into a posthumous judgment system.
“You do not need to change now.
If you believe correctly,
you will be rewarded after death.”
Salvation was pushed into the afterlife.
This Salvation Resembles Other Traditions
This structure overlaps with:
Confucian following-the-heart-without-transgression,
Buddhist liberation,
Laozi’s wu wei,
Stoic apatheia.
All refer not to the disappearance of desire,
but to a redirection of desire.
This is not a difference of religions,
but a shared observation about human consciousness.
Therefore, Jesus’ Salvation Is a Present Issue
Jesus’ salvation was not a future reward—
it was a present transformation.
An event in which a person changes
here and now.
That is why it was dangerous.
That is why it was pushed into the afterlife.
And that is why
it must be read again today.
