We Have Placed Philosophy Too “High”
We usually call philosophy “metaphysics.”
A discipline that deals with invisible realms, transcendent essences, and the ultimate grounds of being.
Because of this, philosophy is often treated as an abstract mode of thought detached from real life.
But this image of philosophy has always felt strangely misaligned with the world we actually live in.
Philosophy is placed above, reality below —
as if philosophy gazes at the sky while we remain standing on the ground.
Whitehead’s Reversal of the “Function of Philosophy”
Alfred North Whitehead defines the function of philosophy in a completely different way.
He says that philosophy is the work of harmonizing, reshaping, and justifying the various intuitions about the nature of things —
and that it must strive to preserve, as fully as possible, the entire body of evidence used in forming any cosmological scheme.
This transforms philosophy from “a discipline that seeks the correct answer”
into a technology that enables already-operating worlds to coexist within a single structure.
Philosophy Is Not a Search for Truth — It Is a Technology for Connecting Worlds
Science, religion, ethics, art, and politics
interpret the world in different ways and describe reality in different languages.
The problem is that these languages often negate and collide with one another.
For Whitehead, philosophy is not a judge that rules over these conflicts,
but rather a designer who structures how these different systems can function together.
Philosophy does not transcend the world.
It designs the connective architecture that prevents already-existing worlds from collapsing.
Not Metaphysics, but Infraphysics
If traditional metaphysics asked, “What is being?”
Whitehead’s metaphysics asks, “How does being operate?”
Not substance, but process.
Not essence, but structure.
Not answers, but operating systems.
In this sense, his philosophy is not truly meta —
it is closer to an infra discipline that supports existence from beneath.
Philosophy Is the World’s Substructure
Philosophy does not float above reality.
It designs the invisible substructures that allow meaning, causality, value, and responsibility to function.
We barely notice these structures —
but when they destabilize, societies collapse almost instantly.
So this is how I want to name philosophy:
Not metaphysics, but infraphysics.
The discipline that manages the infrastructure of existence.
The quietest technology that makes the world run.
Why We Need Philosophy Again
The world we live in today is witnessing simultaneous destabilization of meaning, value, responsibility, and truth.
At such a moment, philosophy is not a voice that delivers answers from above,
but a blueprint that must reinforce the world from below.
Philosophy does not gaze at the sky.
It quietly rebuilds the structures beneath our feet
so that the world we stand on does not collapse.
